“The Healthy Lifestyles program at the YMCA literally changed my life,” Monahan said. “At the end of the 16-week program I lost 12 pounds, reduced my A1C from pre-diabetic to healthy, and was able to discontinue my cholesterol medicine. The program was informative and easy to follow, broken down weekly into different pertinent topics. I enjoyed the weekly meetings, learning a lot from the material presented and tips shared by the team leader and fellow participants. The program also included a free gym membership, where I was able to take advantage of many varied classes, including Zumba, tai chi and my new favorite, pickleball!”
The donor-supported Healthy Lifestyles Pathway program, a diabetes prevention program, focuses on behavior change, movement, weight loss and lifestyle modification. The goals of the program are for participants to avoid or delay Type 2 Diabetes, lose weight and increase physical activity to at least 150 minutes per week or more.
“Six months later, I am maintaining my healthy habits and reaping the benefits of continued good health. I am still in close contact with the friends I made in the program, and I’m even getting better at pickleball! I am very grateful for the great start the Healthy Lifestyles Pathway program provided and would highly recommend it to anyone who is committed to getting fit in a fun and friendly environment.”
