Building Belonging: How Mary Burke-Hueffmaier Creates Community Through School Age Child Care
At the River Crossing YMCA, it’s the people who bring programs to life, and for Mary Burke-Hueffmaier, that means creating a space where children feel supported, connected, and inspired every single day.
As the Site Director and Lead Teacher for School Age Child Care at Kratzer Elementary School, Mary brings years of experience and a deep passion for youth development to her role. After previously working in before and after care with the YMCA of Central Maryland, she found her way back to the Y upon moving to Pennsylvania, eager to continue making a difference in the lives of children and families.
Mary believes that school age child care offers something many kids are missing today, a sense of community. In her program, children from kindergarten through fifth grade come together, forming friendships that feel more like extended family. Older kids mentor younger ones, siblings connect, and everyone has a place to belong. Whether it’s a game of kickball, a creative art project, or a simple board game, these shared experiences help build confidence, cooperation, and joy.
What makes Mary’s approach truly impactful is her commitment to relationships. She meets each child where they are, understanding that growth comes with challenges. By offering consistency, patience, and encouragement, she helps children navigate those moments while reinforcing that they are always valued. Each day is a fresh start, greeted with a smile and a genuine belief in every child’s potential.
Through her work, Mary exemplifies the heart of the YMCA mission, nurturing youth development, fostering belonging, and creating lasting connections that extend far beyond the classroom.
